The Military Archives is delighted to announce that we will be partnering with Studio 9 (principled by Joe Coveney and John O’Connell) as our Artists-in-Residence. This programme, sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, invites artists to reflect upon, and respond to, the collections in the custody of participating institutions and to create new and imaginative ways to engage the public with this material.
We were extremely happy and impressed at the wealth of talented artists who expressed an interest in partnering with the Military Archives and the creativity of their proposals. We would like to express our most sincere appreciation to everyone who applied for taking the time to do so, and for selecting us at their residency of choice from among the participating institutions.
Coveney and O’Connell will bring a wide range of creative experience to the residency, with backgrounds in painting, sculpture, animation and design. Creating animation for social media platforms, they will reflect on the multiple identities, traditions and perspectives within the Archive, a theme that is acutely relevant to the current phase of the Decade of Centenaries. The work will explore the symbiotic link between the Archive and Irish culture - how our culture has been shaped by the events documented in the Archive and how, in turn, our developing culture has informed the Archive.
