Irish Army Census Collection
(12th/13th November 1922)

The National Army Census was taken on 12th/13th November 1922 as a result of the combined effect of the split in the Army earlier in 1922 and rapid and extensive recruitment of soldiers after the outbreak of the Civil War. The census returns are a valuable resource for genealogical research on serving personnel in November 1922.

About the Collection

The Census collection consists of 10 volumes of Census Returns bound in leather and card and arranged alphabetically by military post. In the past, access to the collection has been limited due to their size and location — unless a researcher knew what post a particular soldier served in, there was no way to search the volumes without reading each individual entry.

The volumes are in excellent condition considering their age, but there is some small deterioration in the leather bindings typical of the wear and tear of regular use. Now that the collection has been digitised, the volumes have been re-housed in made-to-measure acid free boxes and will not be in general use in the reading room.
