The Military Archives Reading Room is now closed for the Christmas period and public services will resume on Tuesday 7th January 2020.
2019 has been a very successful year for the Military Archives, with the completion of several important projects. These have included: the cataloguing and release for public inspection of the administrative files of the Irish contingent in the Congo (ONUC) 1960-1964; the Army Inquiry Committee Papers (1924); the Chief of Staff Reports to the Executive Council of Dáil Éireann (1923-1930); and the 18th Military Mission collection (1940-1947). We have made the Collins Papers fully available on our website and collaborated with the communities of Dalkey in Dublin and Ceathrù Thaidhg in North West Mayo on Emergency period commemorative projects. Also this year the Military Service Pensions Collection project had its 8th and 9th releases – the 8th release being the Brigade Activity Reports series, which were met with great enthusiasm from academics and the public alike. These releases brought the number of files processed by the project team over the 100,000 mark.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the year – our Defence Forces and Department of Defence colleagues, our colleagues within the Irish heritage professions and the researching public. With your support we will keep building on these successes in 2020 and continue to make Ireland’s documentary military heritage available to all.
Wishing you a merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year,
The Military Archives Team.
