In this clip Tom speaks about his early service with 1 Battalion in Galway, arriving in December 1976. Tom speaks about the emphasis on sport in the 1 Battalion at this time and tells a story about almost being posted to 28 Battalion, Finner Camp to illustrate this. The Adjutant of 1 Battalion had advised him of his posting but soon after his Company Commander told him he wasn't going. Tom was told the Company Commander had asked the Adjutant who would play full back on the football team if Tom was sent to Finner.
